Hu Wenhui, Deputy Director of the National Intellectual Property Administration, said at the meeting that China has truly become a major intellectual property country and is the first country in the world to have over 4 million valid domestic invention patents. It is worth noting that in 2022, China's patent-intensive industries contributed 1/8 of the country's GDP. The per capita labor productivity in these industries increased from 228,000 yuan per person in 2018 to 313,000 yuan per person in 2022, which is 2.1 times higher than non-patent-intensive industries.Over 4 Million Invention PatentsAccording to statistics, by the end of 2023, China's domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) ownership of invention patents reached 4.015 million, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%, making China the first country in the world to have more than 4 million valid domestic invention patents.Hu Wenhui introduced that it took China 31 years, 4 years, and 2 years to reach the first, second, and third one million effective invention patents, respectively. However, it only took one and a half years to break through the fourth one million. Among these more than 4 million valid invention patents, more than 40% are high-value patents, and the creation and reserve of high-value invention patents are accelerating. In addition, enterprises account for more than 70% of the valid invention patents in China, making them the main driving force for innovation and creation.Furthermore, by the end of 2023, national high-tech enterprises and technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises had 2.134 million valid invention patents, a year-on-year increase of 24.2%, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the total number of domestic enterprises, reaching 73.4%.From a regional perspective, key regions play a significant role in driving innovation.By the end of 2023, the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area had 1.308 million, 703,000, and 672,000 valid invention patents, accounting for a total of 65.6% of the domestic total, with year-on-year growth rates of 21.1%, 21.0%, and 23.2%, respectively. The "Global Innovation Index 2023" report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization shows that the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster, Beijing cluster, and Shanghai-Suzhou cluster occupy three of the top five positions in the world's technology cluster rankings.Patent-Intensive Industries Contribute 1/8 of the GDP"China's patent-intensive industries, with less than 7% of the total employment, account for nearly 50% of the country's R&D expenditure by enterprises, generate nearly 70% of domestic invention patents, and contribute 1/8 of the country's GDP."Ge Shu, Deputy Director and Director of the Strategic Planning Division of the Patent Office of the National Intellectual Property Administration, said at the meeting. It is understood that patent-intensive industries refer to industries that meet certain criteria of invention patent intensity and scale, participate in market competition through intellectual property, and are in line with the direction of innovation and development.
